Just my two cents

Musings on social media and the world as I see it

Crazy comments and totally tacky tangents

please commentLike many people, I spend a lot of time on social networks, blogs and online news sites. Mostly because it’s my job, but also because it is my first source of breaking news and information. And shame on me but I never seem to make the time to leave more thoughtful comments than the obligatory, “Thank you for this fabulous post” or “Wow this post blew me away…” Even though I’m thinking about how wonderful it was or what I learned from it, or even have a counterpoint to make, it always seems that it’s time to move onto the next news site, or post another status update or monitor another tweet stream.

That’s why it never ceases to amaze me how comments can sometimes take a turn for the worse. So often, they stray completely off topic, and sometimes they have no apparent connection at all to the original post. And I always find myself wondering “Who are these people and why do they have so much time on their hands?” Or do they just manage their time really well? Or do they ever sleep?”

What’s even more amazing to me is that it’s often those innoucuous posts that seem so innocent that drum up some comments and tangents that you never expected. Take, for instance, this guest post I did on Hospital Impact. Most of my posts may get a couple coments. This one just went crazy with comments, at least for me!

Now most of the comments were totally on target, while some strayed to the first amendment right guaranteeing free speech. Okay, I get it. Somewhat relevant. And then there was this gem. Now granted, it starts out just fine, and on topic. And then, well, you be the judge:

Wow. Just WOW. I don’t even know what to say. And these are the kinds of things you have to expect when you welcome comments. In today’s world. if you’re not allowing comments, you may as well kiss your credibility goodbye. But then you have to deal with comments like this, and many others that are so much worse.

I chose to ignore this one. What do you do with those wacked out comments and far out tangents? I’d really love to know. So, by all means, please comment! HA!
